BASEMENT FINISHING

Whether it is unfinished or partially done, we can turn your basement into a lower living space! You can say good-bye to your musty, dank and dark basement and make it the best part of the house! Midstates Home Solutions employs talented tradesmen who are qualified to do all the work from start to finish.

Stages:

The first stage of basement finishing is preparatory. During this stage our team will help the homeowner with the complete design and plan for the finished basement. Before the actual construction begins, the team must investigate the foundation walls and ceiling. Our technicians will investigate the exterior perimeter of your house for water infiltration/build-up that could cause problems in the basement. They will repair any leaks and cracks in the foundation walls. We provide a 20 year warranty on our water prevention services during this preparatory stage. Finally, the technicians will inspect the ceiling for major movement and insure that the ceiling is structurally sound. This prevents future cracks and sags in the ceiling. The technicians can also fix squeaks in the ceiling.

The second stage is the construction phase. Our tradesmen will install either a drywall or panel, drop ceiling. They will then install drywall with metal studs and insulation on the walls. The metal studs are used instead of wood to prevent molding should water enter. The team will then rough in the plumbing (if needed) as well as electrical, heating/cooling, cable and communication lines.

The final stage is the finishing phase. This phase includes work that varies based on what the homeowner wants. Our technicians can do anything. We do any finish carpentry, including: entertainment centers, cabinets, bookshelves, and standing islands. We can create a wet bar complete with a custom countertop. We work with any type of floor tiling and/or carpet. We are experts in efficiency and can help you maximize your storage space. The final touch is of course, the paint job.

Hopefully, this brief description gives you an idea of the endless possibilities for your basement. From start to finish, Midstates Home Solutions is your complete contractor.

GARAGE FLOORS

Why do painted garage floors always peel?

There’s a very simple answer. The surface layer of the concrete is too hard for the paint or stain to adhere to. This is especially true under the conditions a garage floor is exposed to:

  • Standing water
  • Salt and brine during the winter
  • Condensation in the spring (ground thawing)
  • Hot tires from vehicles
  • Scuffing due to walking/driving on sand, dirt, etc.

There is a solution – and we know what to do!!

We have a “finishing system” by which our machine will shave off the very dense top skin layer of the concrete. This is the hard layer that forms when the floor is originally poured. By removing this 1/8”-1/4” crust, we expose the typical, more porous concrete.

Now the problem is solved!

With a more porous surface, our paint can “soak” into the concrete, creating a much better bond and greater adherence. To make for an even longer lasting job, we use a Two-Part Epoxy.

Let’s walk through a typical job so you can have a better appreciation for what we’re talking about.

Steps:

  1. Move everything off the floor
  2. Mask off any cabinets, countertops, or workbenches
  3. Seal off any closets and doorways to the interior
  4. If the walls need to be protected, cover them with Visqueen.
  5. For previously painted floors, we have to grind off the old paint.
  6. With the concrete exposed, we can now “shave” off the top 1/8”-1/4” crust.
  7. The larger machine cannot get in to the corners, so we do these areas using hand tools.
  8. Vacuum up all dust and debris
  9. At this time, we are able to see if there are any repairs that need to be done. This would include cracks or holes where chunks of the floor may have come loose. If the repair option is accepted, we will repair these areas.
  10. Prime the entire floor using a Two-Part Epoxy. (We only paint to where the garage door closes. The outside portions of the slab that goes beyond the door can be left as is if you have a concrete driveway, or it can be stained “black” using a masonry stain if you have a blacktop driveway.)
  11. After allowing the primer to cure, we apply the finish coat of the Two-Part Epoxy. (color to be specified)
  12. The floor should be allowed to cure for at least three days before parking on it. You can walk on it after 24 hrs.
  13. OPTIONS: If you are looking for more than just a painted garage floor, you can turn it into a “conversation piece”!!
    1. Flex: While the floor is still wet, we can apply a ‘flex” which is color coordinated with the color you have chosen. This makes your floor have a “terrazzo” look to it.
    2. Clear Coat: To protect the “flex chips” from wearing off, and to further protect the floor from scratching and wearing, we can apply a tough “clear coat”.
    3. Skid Guard: If you want the “Total Package”, while the clear coat is still wet, we apply thousands of “glass beads”. These small beads will protect you from falling when the floor is wet or covered with snow. (It actually feels good on your bare feet!)

Well, that’s about it! We hope this gives you a better understanding of why garage floors peel and what we can do for you. If you are tired of your nasty looking floor, and want one that not only looks good, but will actually be a “conversation piece” give us a call! We’ll be glad to meet with you and go into more details about what we can do for you. Thanks for taking the time to look into our company and the many services we have to offer.
